Mount Meru is the third-highest volcanic mountain in Tanzania at 4566 meters, from Kilimanjaro peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi.
Itinerary Day Description
Day 1 Transfer from the hotel to Momella Gate (1500m) – Miriakamba Hut (2514m)
At 7:30am, you will be picked from your hotel in Arusha town and drive 45km to Mount Meru, which is within Arusha national park. Once your guide has completed the necessary paperwork at the gate, the trip continues to Momella Gate, the starting point of your hike. On the way you can observe giraffes, zebras and many other animals and due to animals, you are with an armed Ranger on the up and down. On the way up, you will be crossing some river and valleys and along with, you can see many animals like buffalo herds, baboons, colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and birds like turracos. In the mid of the way at Mayo falls, you will serve you lunch and then continue to Miriakamba hut for around 5 hours. Dinner and overnight this this Hut.
Day 2 Miriakamba Hut (2514m) – Saddle Hut (3560m)
Today, you will have short climb to acclimatize through a dense forest with mosses and beard lichens for approximately 2-3 hours, on the way to the viewpoint of Mgongo WA Tembo (Elephant Ridge 3200 meters). The hike is steep and slippery and for this, you will be walking over wooden steps. From this view point, you will have a magnificent view of the large, burst crater. After a short rest, the trek continues to the Saddle Hut. Just before you reach it, the elevation changes from mountain rainforest to light bush land. To acclimatize, you may summit Little Mount Meru (3820m) and in the late afternoon coming back at the Saddle hut camp and have a long rest ready for the summit attempt. Dinner and overnight at this Saddle hut.
Day 3 Saddle Hut (3560m) – Socialist Peak (4566m) – Miriakamba Hut (2514m)
Wake up in the around 2:00am, and have some snacks and a hot drink, then taking your way up to the summit with your headlight. Slowly passing through bush land and reach to Rhino Point. The way becomes more challenging, as you will be walking on the long north ridge that takes you to the summit and reach around sunrise. At this sunrise moment, you can see mountain Kilimanjaro on the east and other beautiful landscapes. On the descent, you return to the Saddle Hut where a lunch and a hot drink will await you. Then you will proceed down to Mirikamba Hut, reaching it in the early afternoon. Here you can rest and cerebrate your summit success with your dinner.
Day 4 Miriakamba Hut (2514m) – Momella Gate (1500m) – Transfer to the hotel
After a delicious breakfast, take your route down towards Momella Gate and on the way down, you will be able to see again buffaloes, baboons and other wild animals. This walk can take you 2-3 hour; you will arrive at the Momella Gate, and picked by a car to Arusha town and stay your overnight at your lodge (BB).
