Itinerary Day Description
Day 1: RONGAI GATE (1,800M/5,900FT) TO FIRST CAVE CAMP (2,600M/8,400FT)
Estimated Distance: 11km, Hiking Time: 6 hours, Habitat: Montane Forest
At 7:00am, picked from your lodge in Arusha town, depart to the Rongai Gate via Marangu Kilimanjaro gate for registration. Then you will be transferred to Rongai gate to start your trek. On this first day, you will be hiking through montane forest; on the way up you can see wild animals like elephants, buffaloes… Rongai ascends via the less forested northern side of the mountain, arriving at Firs Cave Camp in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: FIRST CAVE CAMP (2,600M/8,400FT) TO KIKELEWA CAMP (3,600M/11,810FT)
Distance: 6.25km, Hiking Time: 5-6 hours, Habitat: Moorlands
On this day, you will be trekking through Moorland zone and you will have nice views of Mawenzi Peak. The route is relatively short and steep, arriving at Kikelewa camp in the afternoon for your dinner and overnight.
Day 3: KIKELEWA CAMP (3,600M/11,810FT) TO MAWENZI TARN CAMP (4,330M/14,200FT)
Distance: 7km, Hiking Time: 4 hours Habitat: Moorlands
This is the day to acclimatize; you will be having short steep treks on this day and have a long rest in the afternoon and evening. The Mawenzi Tarn campsite is located below Mawenzi Peak and from this point you can have tremendous views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peak.
Day 4: MAWENZI TARN CAMP (4,330M/14,200FT) TO KIBO CAMP (4,750M/15,580FT)
Distance: 7km, Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Alpine desert
On this day cross the lunar landscape of the saddle before arrive at the final camp. Kibo Camp is situated directly below the Kibo cone, giving you views of your final destination-Uhuru Peak.
Day 5: KIBO CAMP (4,750M/15,580FT) TO UHURU PEAK (5,895M/19,340FT) TO HOROMBO HUT
(3,720m/12,200ft) Distance: 7km ascent; 23km descent, Hiking time: 7h to Uhuru, 5h to Horombo Habitat: Stone- ice-cap
You will start your final climb to Kibo Peak (5895m), the Roof of Africa. For the next six hours, you will be hiking by using head torch. The ascent to the crater rim is very steep and the most challenging part of the entire trek; on the way to Gilman Point. The hike from Gilman’s to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb, long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately two hours. Upon reaching the Summit, stay for a while taking photos before starting your descent to Horombo Hut.
Day 6: HOROMBO HUT (3,720M/12,200FT) TO MARANGU GATE (1,800M/5,905FT)
Distance: 15km, Hiking Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Montane Forest
Early morning, after your breakfast, you will take a descent route to Marangu gate (1800m). On the way down you will be crossing beautiful forest. Watch your step during the descent, as the trail can be slippery, arriving at the gate in noon and take your lunch, then you will be picked to Arusha town and stay overnight at your hotel (BB).
